Nearly all of the walks I take with Peter are “scent walks,” as I am a pushover who gets more joy out of watching him sniff and search the cement than I do attending to my indoor human chores. But for those of you who are unaccustomed, a scent walk is basically exactly what it sounds like—a walk where you let the dog smell as much as he likes, and go wherever he wants to go. It is a wonderful Valentine’s treat. “Letting your dog smell while they walk is almost the equivalent of letting them look around,” Byosiere told me. “Obviously don’t run into traffic, but as long as they seem to be having a good time, just follow them and see where they take you.” Bake them a special dog treat If you’d like to make your dog a special dinner and serve it to him on a tiny table with a tiny tablecloth and a little fake candle—oh my god, that actually sounds much better than this idea and you should do that. But if not, you can still bake him a dog treat! There are many recipes available online and I can tell you from experience that your dog will not care if they don’t turn out to be recognizably “Peter shaped,” or whatever your dog’s name is. Your dog will love it, a la Christian in Clueless: “Honey … you baked!” 4. Learn a dance move together “The number one thing I think your dog would love,” Byosiere said, “is spending time with you working towards a goal.” Have you ever watched canine freestyle videos on YouTube? They are videos in which humans “dance” with their dogs competitively—humans in costume; dogs nude—and I highly recommend checking them out. Once you’ve seen enough to have a picture in your mind of what your own dog dance would be, you can start working on your collection of tricks. Peter and I have perfected “spin,” in both directions, as well as “go under one leg.” Please do not feel like you immediately need to ascend to our level of excellence.
Speaking of dog nudity—allow them the dignity of nudity Only once did I attempt to put Peter in a costume. It was a doggy version of the sweater Danny wears in The Shining, and the negative energy surrounding its placement around his doggy body reverberates to this day. He has still not forgiven me. Instead of a tiny tuxedo or heart hat this Valentine’s Day, allow your dog be dignified and nude, like a proud cupid.
